The Hope For Wildlife Society

Canada is known for being a country that is working towards making a difference, and this organization is one of the ones that help prove we are on the right track. The Hope for Wildlife Society, founded by Hope Swinimer in 1997, is a licensed animal rehabilitation center located in Seaforth, Nova Scotia. The center focuses heavily on caring and treating injured or orphaned wildlife, and releasing them back into the wild. The education of animal conservation is also a big part of the center because they want everyone to understand the importance of treating wildlife properly as well as the ecosystems surrounding them, especially since many of them are in danger. Over 1,200 different species of indigenous birds and mammals are brought into the center each year. Most of these animals are treated and are able to return to the wildlife, but their are some whose injuries prove to be to great that they cannot be returned, and instead find a new home at the center. The center is also the only rehabilitation center in Nova Scotia for white-tailed deer and large birds of prey. Not only are animals from the wild brought to the center, they also welcome abandoned pets or animals seized by authorities.

The center would be nothing without its trained volunteers, who subsequently run most of the operation. These volunteers mostly consist of veterinary medical students as well as veterinarians themselves who take the time off to aid the center. This goes to show how much dedication and heart people put into helping the Earth and all its inhabitants. Since the center has been so positively recieved a new facility will be added that will include a new full time veterinary technician on staff. This new facility will also act as a way to improve the centre's programs involving research, education and development of ecosystems. Swinimer feels that teaching others to respect and protect local wildlife is the best they can do to secure a better future for the animals.

This project to help local wildlife is one of the ways human intervention is being used to positively to help the biodiversity of our ecosystems. Without this organization the message of protecting the wildlife would not be put out there. This message is important because so many wildlife are becoming less and less populated and are even in danger of extinction. Without this organization the unfortunate animals who find themselves alone or injured would have nowhere to go. This organization gives them a second chance to help preserve their species.

Here is a video demonstrating the release of a bald eagle back into the wild after completing its rehabilitation,  this is one of the most important parts of the organization:

  1. It is great that these people are helping out animals in need, we need to preserve more wildlife and help the endangered species. I hope there are more organizations out there helping animals.

  2. It's nice to know that their are organizations like this doing things for animals in need. We share this planet with all the other animals and to give them treatment when they're injured is beautiful. Helping animals does not really benefit an individual financially or give them power - it's nice to see that people are doing this at their own will and love for animals.

  3. Knowing that there are people who are involved in organizations such as this make me realize that, despite all the harmful things that humans are the cause of in this world, there are still just as many doing good deeds that have positive effects on the world. It's good to know that organizations like this help the wildlife and the animals in need through their own will and through their love of animals. Imagine if we didn't have an organization like this. What would have happened to all the animals that they have helped? That's something to think about. It's up to us to help the earth when we can, even in small ways. I love animals and to know that this organization helps injured animals with no place to go, and teaches people to respect and protect animals is very heartwarming.
